International Women's Day

International Women’s Day
March 8th marks International Women’s Day, a day which helps to highlight inequalities between the genders and push forward for social change. This is such an important day for our Naomi Project at Kenward, as we continue to help transform the lives of women suffering addiction to drugs or alcohol.
Here is a video of one of our ex-residents, Nicola, who passed through The Naomi Project. Her story helps to shine a light on the issues facing women today and also shows just how much projects such as ours can help women.
The NHS estimates that around 3% of UK women show signs of alcohol dependence. This correlates with studies by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that suggests that successful women in the UK are statistically more prone to be consuming dangerous levels of alcohol on a regular basis, and thus educated women in the UK have the worst alcohol problems in Europe.
“They teach you to look in the mirror and I am slowing becoming to like the woman I see in that mirror again”
However, not all women receive the help that they so desperately need as in the UK alone there are around 8,700 deaths each year due to alcohol. Among women aged 29-34, mortality rates have increased from 14 in every 100,000 to 20 in every 100,000. Researchers are also claiming that the number of women aged 34 and under who are dying from alcohol related conditions has more than doubled since the 1980’s. Therefore projects such as Naomi provide a vital, and lifesaving service in helping these women transform their lives and create a new future without alcohol and drug dependence.
Please help us to help more women like Nicola, by supporting our work in any way you can. For information on becoming a Friend of Kenward through regular donations click here, or to find out how to volunteer click here.
