Reset is a Big Lottery funded support service that assigns volunteer mentors to work within Kent & Medway prisons or approved hostels: supporting ex-offenders who will be resettling within Kent & Medway.

This is a volunteer-led project that works in partnership with existing agencies to help offenders and ex-offenders become valued members of society. The initiative was developed in response to the challenges faced by many ex-offenders when they tried to begin a new life after release from prison and to the high level of interest from numerous community organisations in helping with resettlement.

Reset was formally established in February 2009 and was originally a separate charity, combining voluntary service with a structured professional approach.

Where we work:

In prisons and probation hostels (before release)
Through the gate (on release)
Within the community (after release)

Reducing re-offending:

Research shows that re-offending can be reduced if,on release, prisoners get help with recurring problems such as homelessness, drug addiction and unemployment. Reset aims to offer a range of support and guidance including:

Accommodation and Support Education
Training and Employment
Mental and Physical Health
Drugs and Alcohol
Finance, Benefits and Debt
Children and Families
Attitudes, Thinking and Behaviour.

To allow Reset to achieve positive outcomes, we have established the following:

  • A sound framework of Quality Management
  • Comprehensive agreements with partner agencies
  • Structured training and development for all Volunteers
  • Deployment of Volunteers coordinated by an experienced Project Manager
  • Project Steering Group drawn from a wide range of disciplines and relevant experience.

A number of organisations, both statutory and voluntary, are already working in this field, but there is still a great deal of unmet need. Reset aims to connect with and compliment existing services. We have established strong links with Police, Kent, Sussex & Surrey CRC, the National Probation Service and the Prison Service.

Reset is an initiative that uniquely combines interest and support for ex-offenders from homelessness charities, mental health and addiction organisations; those involved in education and training initiatives, employers and members of faith and community groups.
