Kenward Trust welcomed 1,469 Year 6 pupils hosting Safety In Action 2023

Last 2 weeks, Kenward Trust had the privilege of hosting this year’s Safety in Action; an interactive event that invited Year 6 children from 44 primary schools in Kent to learn about some of the dangers they may face as they become more independent and prepare for transition to secondary school.

This event has been running in Kent since the early 1990s, with several thousand children from Maidstone, Ashford, Swale, Tonbridge and Malling, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Dartford, Gravesham, Thanet and Swanley taking part. It is supported by many organisations including Salus, Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, RNLI, Kent County Council, British Transport Police and UK Power Networks.

A number of scenarios are set up by the different organisations, designed to simulate and provide information in a variety of topics this year they include:

  • Drugs/alcohol – Kenward House Trust

  • Fire safety – Kent Fire and Rescue Service

  • Online Safety – Salus Youth Team

  • Electrical safety – UK Power Network

  • Rail safety – British Transport Police

  • Road safety – Kent County Council Road Safety team

  • Healthy relationships – Salus School Support

  • Peer pressure – Salus Youth Team

  • Prevention Education – Kent County Council Prevent

The attending pupils were divided into teams to rotate around the different safety scenarios, spending time with professionals allowing them to learn important safety messages as well as having the opportunity to ask questions. The event provides a safe and interactive space for the year 6 pupils to develop their own personal and social skills as well as understanding how they can access help and support within their school and the local communities in which they live.
